Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control claimed the two were detained for “the importation of marijuana and importation of utensils used for the consumption of marijuana.”
While recreational marijuana use is permitted on Grand Cayman, importing the drug is not. The charges against Hadid and McCarthy, both 29 years old, read: “Importation of Ganja and Importation of Utensils used for the consumption of ganja.” Before their bail was set, they were sent to the Central Booking Facility.
Hadid and McCarthy had flown in from the United States on a private flight, and upon arrival, a small quantity of cannabis was discovered in their luggage. On July 12, they appeared in a Cayman Islands summary court to enter guilty pleas to charges of importing a restricted substance and a drug utensil.
They were each given a $1,000 fine and charged with a misdemeanor, but no official conviction record existed. A spokesperson for Hadid stated that she was “enjoying” herself in the Cayman Islands despite the arrest and that the cannabis had been obtained lawfully in New York “with a medical license.”
Hadid posted two photographs of herself in a swimsuit to Instagram on Friday. Hadid was seen in two bikinis: one showed her smiling while showing off a massive dragon tattoo on her right leg, and the other showed her standing outside on a lounge chair in a two-piece patterned string bikini.
On Tuesday, she shared a mirror image of herself and two companions in bikinis beside a sun emoji and the message, “Good Morning.” She published further photos of herself modeling various bathing outfits.
