NBA free agency 2023 tracker: James Harden, 76ers and more trade scenarios; latest news, rumors, trades

With the new CBA in effect, the NBA offseason has begun, and while this year’s crop of free agents won’t be as impressive as in years past, plenty of activity is expected throughout the league.

After Thursday night’s NBA Draft, clubs can start talking to undrafted players about contracts at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, June 30. While players can negotiate new contracts anytime, most deals cannot be legally binding until Thursday, July 6, at 12:01 p.m. ET.

James Harden

While James Harden has exercised his player option for the next 2023-24 season, he and the 76ers are “beginning to work together in exploring trade scenarios.”

Since Harden signed a two-year deal with the Sixers last summer, he will not be available for an extension this offseason, as Spotrac’s Keith Smith reported. Next summer, he will be a free agent who may sign with any team.

Barnes and the Kings agreed to a three-year, $54 million deal extension on the eve of free agency. Barnes was a pivotal veteran for the Kings last year, averaging 15.0 ppg while also pulling down 4.5 rpg.

Harden’s fortunes have not improved in the playoffs. He played poorly in his lone postseason game for the Brooklyn Nets, an Eastern Conference semifinal loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021. He blamed a strained left hamstring for the poor showing in Philadelphia’s second-round loss to the Miami Heat the following year.

Some more NBA free agency rumors 2023: Tracking the latest leaks, news and trades

Harrison Barnes

Barnes and the Kings agreed to a three-year, $54 million deal extension on the eve of free agency.

Austin Reaves

Reaves may not be leaving Los Angeles after all, even though he will soon become a restricted free agent.

Kyrie Irving

When free agency opens, Kyrie Irving will likely visit with the Suns, Mavericks, and “possibly other teams,” which might include the Rockets.

Deandre Ayton

Ayton was supposed to be traded to the Rockets in exchange for Tim Hardaway Jr., Richaun Holmes, and JaVale McGee. The Suns “balked” when McGee was added to the roster.

Eric Gordon

The Clippers decided against guaranteeing Gordon’s $21 million contract for the 2023-24 season.

Fred VanVleet

A two-year, $83.6 million deal from Houston is on the table for VanVleet. If he joined the Rockets, he would “start changing their culture as a leader and example-setter for a young team.”

Bruce Brown

Instead of Denver’s $7.8 million, the team may give Brown the whole mid-level exception ($12.5 million annually).

Andre Drummond

According to several sources, Andre Drummond has exercised the one-year, $3.36 million option to keep him with the Bulls through the 2023-24 season.

Max Strus

The Pacers, expected to have roughly $30 million in salary space, are one team “strongly weighing” making an offer for Strus.

Indiana will offer Strus a three-year deal for around $48 million.

Nikola Vucevic

A three-year, $60 million contract agreement between the Bulls and Nikola Vucevic is in the works.

The Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Sacramento Kings are just a few clubs with substantial salary room after the new collective bargaining agreement was enacted on Saturday.
