Shots were reported to UNC Police at the centrally located chemical building, Caudill Laboratories, just after 1 p.m. ET. When UNC Police arrived, they discovered a faculty member had been shot. UNC Police Chief Brian James has confirmed that no one else was hurt. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill postponed all Monday and Tuesday classes. According to Guskiewicz, the University has also distributed resources to its students, teachers, and staff.
At 2:31 p.m. ET, a suspect was located and taken into custody, but James would not disclose who they were until official charges were filed. Because “we wanted to be sure we had that person in custody and it was the correct person,” UNC Police conducted a verification procedure of the suspect before lifting the campus lockdown at 4 p.m.
Start of a new term at UNC
Students and teachers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were forced to take cover in classrooms and escape via first-floor windows only days into the start of the new academic year. After a faculty member was shot and murdered by a gunman, students and professors at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill hid in classrooms. There has been no official announcement of the fatalities among the teaching staff.
Four years ago, a mass shooting occurred on the Charlotte campus of the University of North Carolina, resulting in the deaths of two people and the wounding of four more. Two persons were murdered, and four others were injured in a shooting at the Woodford A. Kennedy Building on the last day of school for the spring 2019 semester, April 30 2019. The suspect, a former UNC Charlotte student named Trystan Andrew Terrell, was quickly apprehended following his arrest.
The UNC shooting Suspect
At about 1 p.m. on Monday local time, UNC Police responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire in the campus’s central scientific lab. About two minutes after the initial contact, police arrived and placed the campus on lockdown, citing the presence of “an armed and dangerous individual.”
Both the victim and the suspect remain unnamed in official reports. Irrelevant to the question of whether or not this was a targeted or random shooting is whether or not the shooters knew each other. At a news conference on Monday night, police refused to say whether or not the individual who had been identified as a person of interest was the same man who had been detained.
There are around 32,000 students enrolled at the institution, in addition to more than 4,000 teaching personnel and 9,000 support workers. The FBI is reportedly helping authorities collect evidence. The UNC Police Department quickly posted a photo of a suspect in the case with the warning, “if you see this person, keep your distance, put your safety first and call 911”.
