On Tuesday, the film’s director and co-chairman of DC Studios, James Gunn, said that Corenswet would play Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. And not just because he resembles Henry Cavill, who played Superman previously when he was younger. When James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” finally hits theaters in 2025, it will star David Corenswet as the Man of Steel.
According to Gunn, Clark Kent/Superman (played by Corenswet) deals with his mixed Kryptonian and human origins owing to his upbringing by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas. Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane of The Daily Planet, will co-star with Corenswet.
Who is David Corenswet?
Having completed her studies at Julliard in 2016, Corenswet was cast as a guest star on House of Cards in 2018. The actor grew up in the Philadelphia area. Before he and his wife became lawyers, his father had a successful career on stage. Corenswet’s theater credits as a kid include All My Sons, Macbeth, La Vie En Bleu, and The Foriging Harvest, all by Arthur Miller.
How did he end up playing Superman?
Over the weekend of June 17th, Corenswet appeared in a series of screen tests for the part of Man of Steel, both in costume as Superman and everyday clothing. He starred with Emma Mackey, who was considered for the role of Lois Lane before the role ultimately went to Rachel Brosnahan. Tom Brittney and Nicholas Hoult were also considered for the role of Kal-El.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published in 2019, he expressed interest in playing the legendary hero. ‘My far-fetched goal is to play Superman,’ Corenswet told the magazine. I’d like to see a more positive, retro-styled interpretation of Superman. While I appreciate Henry Cavill’s grim interpretation, I hope the sequel is more upbeat.

In the 1978 picture of the same name, the late Christopher Reeves debuted as Superman. Three installments of his successful series were released. Brandon Routh was the next actor to play the Man of Steel in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns (2006). Unfortunately, the picture wasn’t successful enough to kick off a new franchise. Thus he only appeared in that one movie. Henry Cavill, who played Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2017), is the most recent actor to perform the role.
Rachel Brosnahan, the next Lois Lane
Brosnahan, 32, is perhaps the more recognizable of the two this time, given her roles in many critically acclaimed television shows. She has experience on both TV and the big screen. She is now ready to play one of the key figures in Superman (and DC) lore thanks to her role as “Midge” Maisel in the Amazon Prime Video series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (for which she won two Golden Globes for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2018 and 2019 and received Emmy, and many more nominations).
